Situated in the heart of beautiful Topsham in Devon, Peter Tosh Opticians are a well-established small independent opticians providing community-based optical excellence for all of the family.
The current owner, Peter Tosh, took the practice over in 2017 when the previous practice owner decided to retire. Buying the business was a natural progression for Peter who, having joined the practice in 2011, had built up a strong client base and reputation for providing excellent advice and service. The practice is now also very much a family business with Peter’s wife Suzie, an experienced optical adviser, supporting the business as company secretary and administrator.
Peter has had an enviable academic and working background having graduated from Cardiff University in 1999, achieving top of the year with First Class Honours. After passing his professional qualifying exams at the first attempt, he then worked for a large Multiple for over 10 years, where he was heavily involved in the mentoring and tutoring of student, and newly qualified Optometrists.
The practice has a broad family client base, welcoming both NHS and private patients for advice and examinations. The practice utilises the latest technologies to ensure that clients receive a comprehensive and professional eye care service. For example, the practice has invested in technologies such as Optical Coherence Tomography, a non-invasive imaging test which uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of the retina.
As well as eye testing, the practice has a strong retail element offering a wide selection of frames and lenses, as well as assisting with more specialist corrections like safety spectacles or sports vision. They also cater for all types of contact lens users’ needs as well as offering full hearing care services with their partner Bloom Hearing Care, essentially providing a one stop shop for eye and ear health and ongoing care.
The practice continues to grow and be extremely successful under Peter’s leadership, developing the technical expertise of his staff and with a key practice objective of putting client care and support at the heart of everything they do. This means offering a tailored service and spending adequate time with patients to build long term relationships in order to deliver the best possible advice.
Nothing stands still in the Optical sector and Peter continues to develop his professional skills having recently taken further examinations in Minor Eye Conditions, to enable him to deal with minor eye health problems and of course enhancing his service offering to his local patients.
Peter started working with Thompson Jenner’s Exeter Partner Jon Westley in November 2016, with Jon’s first task to assist with the incorporation and set-up of the company and provide advice in connection with the acquisition of the business from its previous owner. Jon’s advice and support enabled the process to happen smoothly and be trouble free. Since then Jon has continued to provide specialist advice in connection with ongoing accountancy and taxation matters using his sector expertise to understand the needs of the practice from both a business and individual perspective.
