Restart Grant

This is a new payment available for business owners, which is aimed at assisting them navigate their way through what is hoped to be the last stages of Covid -19 restrictions imposed.

This is set to replace the Local Restrictions Support Grant which is set to close on 31 March 2021.

Who is Eligible?

This grant is aimed at supporting businesses that are aiming to re-open safely from April 2020.

Your business must be rate paying and based in England. Furthermore, your business must be trading as at 1 April 2020, businesses that are insolvent or have been removed from the Companies House register will not be eligible for the grant.

How Much are the Grants?

The first grant is aimed at  businesses in the non-essential retail sector. These businesses will be able to receive a one off grant of up to £6,000 per premises. The grant awarded depends on the rateable value of the premises, the payments awarded are as follows:

  • If the rateable value is lower than £15,000, then up to £2,667 may be claimed.
  • If the rateable value is between £15,000 – £51,000, then up to £4,000 may be claimed.
  • Where the rateable value exceeds £51,000, then up to £6,000 may be claimed.

The second grant is for eligible businesses who are in the hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym sectors. These businesses will be eligible to receive a one off grant of up to £18,000. The sum received by these businesses depends on the rateable value of their premises. The payments awarded will be as follows:

  • If the rateable value is lower than £15,000, then up to £8,000 may be claimed.
  • If the rateable value is between £15,000 – £51,000, then up to £12,000 may be claimed.
  • Where the rateable value exceeds £51,000, then up to £18,000 may be claimed.

Like previous grants issued of this nature, this will be classed as taxable income in the year of receipt. So payments received pre 5 April 2021 will be taxed in the 2020/21 tax year.

How do I Apply?

These grants will be available from 1 April 2021. However, applications may be submitted before this date.
