I joined Thompson Jenner in 2016 from a small agricultural accountancy firm having done the majority of my ACCA exams. I had been looking to progress my career with a larger and more forward-looking firm who had the resources to offer me structured training and a career path.
On joining I was able to continue with my qualification with a completely smooth transition as Thompson Jenner were very accommodating, allowing me to stay with my course provider and supporting me throughout my studies. Alongside, with their ongoing help and support, I have subsequently also completed my CTA qualification.
Working at a larger firm has enabled me to gain a wider understanding of both tax and accounts to assist me in my studies. It has also given me a lot of valuable and practical experience of working with a diverse client base.
Thompson Jenner are a great firm to work for with a fantastic team and I am really pleased I made the move to the firm. Everyone has been very friendly, supportive and welcoming throughout my time here. Studying and working can be demanding, but Thompson Jenner understand this and look after their staff welfare at all times. There are also social events outside of work which they encourage all team members to get involved. It’s a great way to meet and socialise with staff from across the firm.
I joined Thompson Jenner in September 2015, previously having worked as a bookkeeper within a small local bookkeeping and payroll company where I had completed my AAT. I was looking to advance my career further in accountancy and had the opportunity to visit Thompson Jenner for a weeks work experience to see what the next step up would entail. It was during this week, during which Thompson Jenner were very accommodating and supportive of training, that I knew I wanted to advance in the accountancy profession and work towards the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’s ACA qualification working for Thompson Jenner.
With the experience of previously studying for my AAT, I knew that working alongside studying would be difficult for my upcoming ACA studies, however, Thompson Jenner provided study days and support in order to ensure my goals were met. It was also extremely helpful during my studies having other trainees on a similar level as myself alongside newly qualified and experienced colleagues within various departments. These provided a wealth of knowledge in a large variety of industries to provide real life examples to help relate to questions and scenarios seen in my studies.
So far my career has progressed well and with the completion of my ACA in 2018 I have been able to share my experiences with new trainees joining the firm. I have also been able to take on a more senior role in audit working with clients across a range of sectors.
Thompson Jenner is a fantastic firm to work for and it’s a decision back in 2015 that I am glad to have made, and having the support and the friendships made with colleagues that continues with social events outside of work hours is an added bonus. It’s a firm that always ensures there is a good balance between work and play.
Having started with Thompson Jenner LLP at the very beginning of my accountancy career I have been given full training during my time here. Thompson Jenner have been very supportive in all areas of my training and were flexible to my needs when booking my courses. This allowed me to easily progress through the 15 ACA exams within the three-year training contract agreed.
As part of the audit and accounts department, the practical experience I gained from my varied workload provided me with all the knowledge and skills required to quickly make me feel a valued member of the team. Working from the Exeter office with frequent visits to clients has given me a complete picture of the way different businesses are run, which when nearing the end of my studies was invaluable.
Now working as an accounts and audit senior my days are still very varied; mixing between larger audit jobs, preparing statutory accounts along with other specific client requirements.
I have always been drawn to the friendly and supportive culture of the firm making Thompson Jenner a great place to work and build a career in accountancy.
