Graduate Trainee Chartered Accountant

Due to continued expansion Thompson Jenner has multiple vacancies for graduate trainee chartered accountants. The requirements for this role are either a degree or AAT qualification. The successful candidate will join our busy team and receive full training in all aspects of accountancy including the preparation of accounts, taxation and audit work, as well as studying for the chartered accountancy qualification.

Financial Services Business Support Assistant

You would be joining a small friendly team in an established and respected financial services company. There is scope to grow in the role over time and full training and support will be offered to the right person to help them achieve this. This could include working towards any appropriate qualifications.

Location: Exeter

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Support the financial advisers to meet business targets
  • Act as day-to-day point of contact for client service to resolve administrative issues
  • Manage financial advisers’ diaries by booking meetings and appointments
  • Help financial advisers prepare for meetings
  • Preparing client review packs
  • Assist Paraplanners to conduct product and investment research
  • Ensure files are compliant and complete
  • Process new business and track to completion
  • Maintaining databases and back office systems
  • Processing and progressing applications

Key skills required:

  • Experience in a customer focused administration role within financial services would be advantageous
  • Ability to liaise internally and externally on administrative matters
  • Exceptional filing, recordkeeping, and organizational skills
  • Computer literacy including a good knowledge of word, outlook and excel
  • Knowledge of Intelligent Office back office system would be beneficial

Full time Accounts Senior

The role: We are looking for an experienced Accounts Semi-Senior/Senior to join our growing team. To be considered for the role you should be qualified or part-qualified ACA/ACCA (AAT qualified considered) with previous Audit/Accounting experience preparing accounts for sole traders, partnerships, and OMB & SME limited companies.  You will be expected to prepare accounts and Corporation Tax Returns for a varied mix of clients; answer ad hoc client queries via telephone/ email; assist in the mentoring and development of junior staff; and, work well within the team to deliver high standards of work.

Full time Tax Senior/Assistant Manager

The role: We are looking to recruit an experienced Tax Senior or Assistant Manager to join our busy and growing team. You will be responsible for looking after and advising high net worth individuals on all aspects of personal tax and also corporate clients on their tax compliance, VAT and all aspects of tax planning opportunities which arise in typical OMB/SME businesses. You will also assist in the management of a portfolio of personal tax clients along with general tax compliance work and tax advice.

Location: Exeter and Exmouth

The person will ideally have the following: 

  • Corporate Tax experience including knowledge of current relief schemes (e.g. EMI, SEIS, EIS, R&D tax credits)
  • Personal Tax experience
  • Trust experience
  • AAT/ATT or ICAEW/ACCA/CTA Qualified
  • Strong track record of Tax CPD and high level of current legislation knowledge
  • Excellent IT skills and software capability

You must have good attention to detail and be able to work independently.  Personality and good communication skills are essential as there will be significant client contact.

Salary: This will be dependent upon qualifications and experience, expected to be £40k plus.

Full/Part time Bookkeeper

The role:

We are looking to recruit an experienced Bookkeeper to join our busy and growing Bookkeeping team at our Exmouth office. Our team provide a seamless and efficient service to an interesting and expanding client base of small businesses across Devon and the South West.

Location: Exmouth (although part working from home will be considered)

The person:

You will be responsible for your own portfolio of clients, providing them with a bookkeeping service up to trial balance and assisting clients with meeting VAT deadlines and CIS returns.  You may also be required to prepare monthly or quarterly management accounts for some clients.

To be considered for this role you should have extensive experience of bookkeeping and preparation of VAT returns, ideally having worked in a busy practice environment, working with tight deadlines. You will have good working knowledge of accounting software, including Sage, Quick Books and Xer and ideally, you be well versed in the functionality of Xero, but if not full training can be provided. Experience of MTD implementation would be desirable.

It is expected that you will be AAT, IAB or ICB qualified or part qualified. You must have good attention to detail and be able to work independently.  Personality and good communication skills are essential as there will be significant client contact including client visits where required.

Salary:

This will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Payroll Administrator

Responsible for: Maintaining clients’ payrolls and assisting the Payroll Services team to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the department.

Location: Exeter/Exmouth

The Position: The successful applicant would work our Payroll Services departments, which act for many businesses such as those who do not have, or do not want, expensive, labour intensive and highly specialised payroll facilities of their own. Our team provide a seamless and efficient service to an expanding client base across Devon and the South West.

The person: This is an ideal opportunity for an adaptable, organised, highly efficient and numerate person to join our expanding payroll team.

You will be part of the practical day-to-day running of clients’ payrolls as part of a busy and committed team. This will include, processing tax and allowances and delivering regular management updates. Experience within payroll and familiarity of Sage Payroll software is essential. Knowledge of XERO payroll is also desirable. More important is that you are cheerful, adaptable and enthusiastic and able to thrive in a busy office environment. You will also be used to meeting tight deadlines, motivated and have an extremely high attention to detail with excellent keyboard and IT skills, especially a good knowledge of Excel.

Key tasks:

  • Undertaking clients’ payrolls according to payroll instructions and HMRC procedures.
  • Accurately completing all assignments within agreed timescales
  • Investigating and resolving day to day problems arising during assignments and notifying Payroll Manager of these and any unresolved problems.
  • Keeping the Payroll Manager and the Partners up to date on all significant dealings with clients.
  • Maintaining time-recording on client affairs on a daily basis in accordance with the firm’s procedures.
  • Liaising with other departments within the firm as necessary on client affairs.
  • Observing office manuals, procedures and instructions as issued by the firm.
  • Ensuring computer skills are developed and maintained to ensure effective completion of work.
  • Developing and staying familiar with new payroll legislation and compliance.

Salary: This will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

I joined Thompson Jenner in September 2015, previously having worked as a bookkeeper within a small local bookkeeping and payroll company where I had completed my AAT. I was looking to advance my career further in accountancy and had the opportunity to visit Thompson Jenner for a weeks work experience to see what the next step up would entail. It was during this week, during which Thompson Jenner were very accommodating and supportive of training, that I knew I wanted to advance in the accountancy profession and work towards the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’s ACA qualification working for Thompson Jenner. With the experience of previously studying for my AAT, I knew that working alongside studying would be difficult for my upcoming ACA studies, however, Thompson Jenner provided study days and support in order to ensure my goals were met.
