Manor Lodge Residential Care Home

Award winning Manor Lodge exemplifies everything that a residential home should offer - superb facilities and a safe, secure and caring environment which residents are happy to call their home

Based in an Edwardian house in Exmouth and surrounded by half an acre of landscaped gardens, award winning Manor Lodge exemplifies everything that a residential home should offer its elderly clients – superb facilities and a safe and secure environment where residents can lead an independent, comfortable life and are happy to call it their home.

From its original 16 beds, the home now provides care for up to 38 male and female clients over the age of 65 from modern well- equipped rooms. The home has a rating of excellence from the Care Quality Commission.

The home was acquired by Ray and Gina Kerler-Lovegrove in 1999. At that time, the major challenge for Ray and Gina was making the business viable. The home, and the sector in general, was troubled by low profitability, high staff turnover and low morale and the poor levels of service quality provided.

Ray and Gina began their journey to turn things around with an overriding goal to achieve the highest standards of excellence and quality of life care.

As well as significantly investing in the facility, a major part of Ray and Gina’s success has been their ongoing investment in staff and training, which they believe is essential in achieving a first -class quality service and ensuring the continued success of the home. Manor Lodge is proud to hold Investors in People award which was first achieved in 2001. They have gone on to be recognised for their continuing exemplary quality performance and have achieved the Gold standard. In 2003 the home also won the South West National Training Awards.

Manor Lodge has been sympathetically restored and modernised. Following an extension to the premises in 2003, due to high demand for their services, Ray and Gina commenced a further major investment to expand the home in 2015. Work completed in 2017 and the extension expanded the home to include ten new fully en-suite bedrooms, updated conservatory dining room with café facilities and a further lounge and computer area.

In 2013 and 2015, Manor Lodge won the ‘Health Provider of the Year’ at the Exmouth Business Awards, recognising their standing and the support they give to the local community. They have also won ‘Exmouth in Bloom’ for twelve years running for their fantastic gardens.

Gina Kerler-Lovegrove– Proprietor, Manor Lodge Residential HomeExmouth Partner Ruskin Wilson met Ray and Gina in 2003 before the business was incorporated. Ruskin and the team at Thompson Jenner have worked with and supported Ray and Gina through the development of Manor Lodge (Devon) Limited to the highly prestigious and successful home that it is today. Helping them with the various issues during the two major phases of development, including advice regarding the construction teams and other professionals has been key, as has resolving all the tax opportunities of the development, so that they received the best tax outcome.

Ruskin also helped with the establishment and development of Manor Lodge’s sister company Premier Community Services Limited. The high quality, full supporting domiciliary care service based in Exmouth, works alongside Manor Lodge to provide high quality care at home, based on the same levels of care offered within Manor Lodge. This has involved not only providing the usual financial support, but also extra services, such as providing in-depth support during a high- level staff disciplinary matter and sourcing a new manager/bookkeeper for the company.

Ruskin currently works closely with Ray and Gina and their Bankers, NatWest, to monitor the businesses’ performance and help to keep the bank happy!

The home is now an extremely successful business with occupancy running at 100%. The business strategy is a simple one – retain a good work life balance and to deliver the highest quality of service and maintain good practice at all times. Ray and Gina also firmly believe that their team is their business and they are proud to recognise the contribution to their success from the management team led by Eileen O’Neill and the dedicated team around them.

Thompson Jenner continues to work closely with Ray and Gina and support Manor Lodge in a number key areas including:

  • Advice and guidance with business planning
  • Forecasting and liaising with the company’s bankers
  • Detail tax advice, both personal and corporate
  • Bookkeeping and management accounting
  • Preparation of accounts and reports
  • Payroll and Auto–enrolment support
  • Business and personal tax planning
  • Company secretarial services
  • Commercial property advice

What the client said:

We originally purchased Manor Lodge in 1999. Both being new to business and new to Devon we wanted to engage an Accountant based on recommendation.

Meeting Ruskin in 2003 was like a breath of fresh air. Besides Thompson Jenner taking care of the practical provision of our wages and accounts, we believed Ruskin understood our vision and the direction we wanted to take the business in. We felt he was as enthusiastic as we were.

A great trusting relationship developed with Ruskin and his team and their help and support has been invaluable to us. He has personally been a sounding board and guided us in some major decisions and ventures.

Over the years Ruskin has given us unconditional and practical advice in order for us to achieve our aims, which ensures Manor Lodge, is, and remains, successful in a highly competitive field. Of course, we cannot leave out our sister company Premier Community Services which originally was part of Manor Lodge but with the support of Ruskin is now a successful stand-alone business.

Thompson Jenner has also grown, however we still feel they listen and treat us as if we were the only client they had.
