Partners

Paul Carnell - FCCA

Paul joined Thompson Jenner in 1998, qualifying with the firm, before taking on a number of senior management roles firstly in audit, specialising in FSA and specialist assignments, before moving on to corporate and personal taxation. He specialises in owner managed businesses, corporate and unincorporated, advising on all aspects of accountancy, taxation, management accounting and business start-ups. He has particular specialisms in tax planning and also the Medical sector, in particular Dental practices.

Paul is also involved with the firm’s graduate student training, overseeing the training needs of the firms next generation of accountants. He became a Partner in 2013 and is based in our Exmouth office.

Neil Curtis - BSc Hons FCA - Managing Partner

A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a graduate in applied maths and computing science, Neil qualified in 1980 with a leading international firm. He joined Thompson Jenner in 1983 and became a Partner with the firm later that year and Managing Partner in 2011. He is responsible for advising corporate businesses and larger partnerships and regularly undertakes the role of business adviser to clients to assist in the growth and development of the business. Neil is based in our Exmouth office.

Simon Lewis - BA (Hons) ACA

Simon Lewis qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Thompson Jenner in 2003 after graduating with a first class honours in Accounting and Finance from Oxford Brookes University.  During his qualifying exams, Simon achieved awards in the South West for coming first in the Business Finance exam and the final admitting case study exam, as well as coming third in the UK in the Business Finance exam.

Simon specialises in advising on business start-ups and growing businesses working closely with clients to monitor their performance. Specific areas covered include taxation (both personal and corporate), property transactions, acquisitions and disposals, succession planning and corporate finance. He also acts for charities advising on specific areas such as strategic financial planning, governance, audit services and compliance and is increasingly involved with the recent introduction of the Academy schools policy. Simon has also been involved in providing financial and commercial advice regarding procurement projects, both for clients tendering for such contracts and as part of the procurement panel for those entering into the contract. Simon is based in our Exmouth office.

Gary Salter - FCCA

Gary qualified in 1984 with Ernst & Whinney and joined Thompson Jenner in the same year. Gary specialises in dealing with owner managed businesses and has wide experience of helping businesses grow. Gary has wide experience of working with business start ups, sole traders, partnerships, companies and charities. He is a General Practitioner dealing with all aspects of auditing annual and periodic management accounts, taxation, personal financial and tax planning. Gary is based in our Exeter office.

Dave Tucker - FCCA

Dave  joined Thompson Jenner in 1997 as a trainee Accounting Technician and then progressed onto his Chartered Certified Exams. He qualified in 2002 and was appointed as Senior Audit Manager specialising in audits for SME's, large companies and charitable organisations. Dave was appointed as Head of Audit in 2011, managing clients’ across the firm along with leading the firm’s specialist Education team responsible for Academy schools and educational trusts.

He became a Partner in 2013 and has overall responsibility for our Audit teams. Dave is based in both our Exmouth and Exeter offices.

Jon Westley - FCA

Jon trained in the corporate services department of a top 10 national firm and qualified in 1996 before joining Thompson Jenner in 1999. In addition to the main areas of corporate accounts, audit and tax, Jon has also worked on several corporate finance assignments and outsourcing. Jon specialises in assisting clients to develop their accounting systems to produce reliable, timely management information. He has particular experience in advising Retail Opticians and individual Optometrists who work in the industry on matters of VAT, accounting, and business and personal tax planning. He became a partner at our Exeter office in 2008.

Ruskin Wilson - BSc FCA

A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a physics graduate, Ruskin offers a wide range of experience specialising in accounting, audit and taxation work for the smaller owner managed business. He is always keen to adopt a ‘hands-on’ approach with his clients to promote profitability through regular advice, monitoring and support.

Ruskin is evidence of the firm’s commitment to training, having qualified with Thompson Jenner in 1989, and following a six month spell in Australia, returned to manage the corporate services department in Exeter, before becoming a partner in 2000.  He also considers himself extremely lucky to have one of the best office views in the South West, looking over the seafront at Exmouth!

Clare Harvey- ACA- Business Services Manager

Clare joined the firm as a trainee in 1994 and became a qualified Chartered Accountant in 2001. She now manages a team that looks after a diverse range of clients but specialises in business planning and development for growing family businesses. Clare works at our Exeter office.

Paul joined our audit team in 2006 after qualifying with a London firm in 2003. On qualification, he worked for a specialist forensic accountancy firm in London before moving with his family to Exmouth. Paul manages a client portfolio of small incorporated and unincorporated businesses as well as individuals offering clients a wide range of accountancy and taxation advice. A graduate of Economics and Politics, Paul has worked in Japan and Australia and as a government economist before starting his training as a Chartered Accountant. Paul is based in our Exmouth office.

Stephen McCaffery - BA (Hons) ACA - Corporate Services and Tax Manager 

Stephen joined Thompson Jenner in 2011 having most recently worked in the financial services industry for a FTSE100 company. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2008 with KPMG whilst specialising in audit. Stephen, who also has a BA (Hons) Business Studies degree, manages a client portfolio of small incorporated and unincorporated businesses as well as individuals offering clients a wide range of accountancy and taxation advice. Stephen is based in our Exmouth office.

David Simms - BSc(Hons) FCCA - Corporate Services Manager

After qualifying with a firm in Bristol in 2004, David joined our firm as Audit Senior in 2005 before becoming a Corporate Services Manager in 2009. He manages a range of unincorporated and incorporated clients providing advice on various accounting and taxation matters. David enjoys working closely with his clients and as such has built many strong relationships. David is based in our Exeter office.

Carla Westley - ACA - Corporate Services Manager

Carla joined Thompson Jenner as an audit trainee in 1995, qualified in 2001 and became a Corporate Services Manager in 2004.  She is responsible for audit and accounts clients ranging from sole traders to medium-sized entities. Carla is based at our Exeter office and works with clients across the firm.

Geoff Fraser - FCA CTA BSc - Head of Taxation

Geoff qualified with a medium sized firm of Chartered Accountants in London in 1989.  He became a member of The Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1991.  After spending six years working in London and then working for a large independent firm in the North West, he has worked for Thompson Jenner as head of taxation for over ten years, having joined the firm in 1999.

He specialises in all areas of personal and corporate taxation. Geoff is based in our Exeter and Exmouth offices.

Jacqui White - FCCA - Tax Manager

Jacqui joined the firm as a trainee in 1989 and qualified in 1994. She specialises in tax advice but has wide range of knowledge and a depth of experience in all aspects of small incorporated and un-incorporated businesses. Jacqui is based in our Exmouth office.

Paul McCarthy - Commercial Director - Think IT  

Paul studied computing as part of his degree at Exeter University and was a business manager at Thompson Jenner before leaving to work in industry where he gained extensive knowledge and experience of the use of computers and IT systems in a business environment. Now a director of Think IT he provides practical advice regarding accounting systems and the use of IT in helping to drive a business forward. Paul is based in Exeter.

Andrew Newall - Technical Director - Think IT  

Andy, a director of Think IT, is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer with an HND in business information technology. He has developed immense skills in all aspects of IT and has overseen many client projects and installations. He makes use of his encyclopedic knowledge of Microsoft operating systems and has installed over 50 servers for various businesses and organisations. Andy is based in Exeter.

Financial Services 

Philip Dalley - Independent Financial Planner TJFS Ltd

Philip has an honours degree in Financial Services from Bristol Business School and over 22 years experience in the industry. Originally from Worcestershire, Philip spent 5 years in Surrey where he ran his own IFA practice. He has now lived in Devon since 2001 and in that time has developed a strong relationship with a number of local solicitors firms.

Through working closely with solicitors, he has developed his knowledge and expertise in areas such as inheritance tax and estate planning, trusts and pension sharing. Philip is the company’s Equity Release and Long Term Care specialist and holds the relevant Chartered Insurance Institute qualifications.

In his spare time Philip can often be found tinkering with one of his classic cars, working on a DIY project or walking his Cairn Terriers.

Neil Sear - Director TJFS Ltd

After completing his degree in Economics, Neil returned to Exmouth where he was educated, and started his career in financial services in 1989. Over the past 20 years he has gained experience as an adviser, compliance officer and trainer and has built up a wealth of knowledge and expertise in all aspects of financial planning. Neil is a director of Thompson Jenner Financial Services Ltd. Neil is based in our Exeter office but regularly works out of the Exmouth office.

Samantha Cole - Payroll Manager

With over 15 years experience in delivering compliant payroll services, Sam heads Thompson Jenners specialist payroll department serving clients of various sizes and across a range of industry sectors. Before joining the firm Sam was Payroll Manager for a nationwide recruitment agency where she also gained significant HR experience. Sam is based in our Exeter office.

Robert Munday - Business Development Manager

Robert joined Thompson Jenner in 2006 with over 20 years of marketing and business development experience.  He has been involved in the briefing, initiation, planning and implementation of marketing and PR strategic plans and campaigns for several large and small organisations as well as running his own business in the South West. At Thompson Jenner he is responsible for all aspects of the firm’s marketing, media and public relations activities. Robert is based at our Exeter office.

Peter Walmsley - BSc FCA -Consultant 

A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and an economics graduate, Peter joined Thompson Jenner in 1980 and was previously Managing Partner of the firm. An experienced non executive director, Peter provides straightforward, practical advice to owner managed businesses and business advice and non executive director expertise to corporate clients. Peter is based in our Exeter office.

John Mackie ACIB - Corporate Finance Consultant

John has a wealth of experience in the banking sector going back over thirty years and was until his retirement Area Director for Lloyds TSB bank with overall responsibility for Commercial and Business Banking in the region. His prime role at Thompson Jenner is assisting the firm’s corporate services team in helping SME clients who have funding needs by developing funding strategies and facilitating introductions to funding sources. He also uses his extensive knowledge of the business community to promote the firms broader financial and business services.
